With Mozy announcing an end to 'unlimited' online backup there's been a frenzy of activity, with hundreds of their customers looking for alternatives, and other providers brandishing enticing offers. Ironic that it should all kick off the day we started our new promotions, but we'll do our best to make the most of the wonderful coincidence ;-)

Those that already have online backup services know the value of the service, and that warm and fuzzy - sometimes smug - peace of mind that it brings. They may have been caught out in the past and lost loads of valuable data, or know someone else who has. They may be one of the sensible minority that recognise the value and importance without needing the learn the hard way. I sure wish I was a few years ago!

I used Mozy myself for a while, but had problems with it constantly crashing and moved to Carbonite. Drupal 7 Released

Many of the sites we have developed recently are using Drupal, a powerful Content Management System (CMS) that offers great flexibility in the way information is handled.

A major new release is now available, though the exisiting version 6 is still supported also.

There are many improvements with the new Drupal 7, but not all themes and modules are compatible as yet, so our own site remains on Drupal 6 for the time being. We know that some of you will be keen to get your teeth into Drupal 7 though, and we are happy to migrate any exisintg sites over to Drupal 7.

If you already have a Drupal-powered website with us and are interested in upgrading to Drupal 7 please contact us to discuss an upgrade plan. Websites will be offline for a short time during the upgrade process, and some functionality may be affected. For these reasons we will not automatically upgrade sites to Drupal 7, but will gladly work with you to agree a suitable time to perform the upgrade on your behalf. There may be a charge for this, depending on the support agreement you have with us, if any.

If you are interested in having a new Drupal-powered site please contact us. All new Drupal installations will use Drupal 7.

Changes to Broadband Services

Our broadband service partner, Heart Telecom, has just announced its amalgamation with 2Circles. We are currently reviewing the additional services and opportunities that this will open up, but does mean a few changes in the interim.

Broadband Referral Programme
this was recently publicised to a carefully selected number of clients and contacts is unfortunately suspended temporarily while we continue discussions with 2Circles. We hope to be able to relaunch this promotion within the next two weeks. All existing referral rewards under the scheme will of course be honoured.
New Customers
We are still happy to discuss and arrange services with new customers. This may be on slightly different terms to those currently listed on our site, but we will endeavour to ensure you receive an equal - if not better - package.
Existing Customers
All existing accounts are unaffected at this stage. Your service will continue as it is, and support is available through the usual routes as before.

We can now connect to computers remotely from a mobile phone - subject to data connection - absolutely anywhere. Obviously it's not too easy to navigate round a full computer screen on a mobile phone screen, but it does mean we can respond to urgent requests almost immediately. The service also provides an indication of where a device is located, which can assist in recovering stolen computers.

Contact Numbers update

We mentioned it in another post last week, but now the changes have been made we can repeat it more officially....

As of today we have made a couple of changes to our contact numbers, as below:

Our main number remains unchanged, 033 3340 3380, and our existing 08 numbers can also still be used, but it is the 03 number that we now use on all material. Calls to 03 numbers are charged the same as all other standard landline numbers, and will be included in any inclusive minute bundles you have.

Receiving International Calls

We have recently been asked about receiving calls to our Fax2Mail service from overseas. There have always been some problems associated with calls from abroad to 087x numbers, causing primarily by the various call rates that apply on these numbers. 084x numbers are generally less problematic, and should be able to receive calls from abroad generally, but we cannot offer a 100% cast-iron guarantee on this. Some countries/carriers may not allow calls to be made still.

URL Shortening services such as tinyurl and bit.ly have become increasingly popular, owing a lot of their popularity to Twitter where long URLs simply don't fit within the 160 character limit.

As we begin to make more use of social media sites such as twitter and facebook, the need for such a service is all the more important for us, and rather than showing favouritism to any particular service we've setup our own!

Switching screens in Win7

This tip may not benefit many readers, but could be extremely helpful for a few Windows 7 users with multiple monitors.

Multiple monitors can be a helpful tool if you need lots of windows open at once, can be used with projectors, or enable you to extend your desktop onto a TV to watch a DVD. My own PC is setup in such a way at home, but occasionally windows have incorrectly opened on the extended desktop area. Having to turn the TV over to find them and move them is an unnecessary hassle - and takes a very brave man if someone else is watching the TV at the time!

Google is changing parts of the infrastructure that powers their hosted "apps" services. We are working with them as 'early adopters' to roll the changes out to some of our managed solutions in advance of the global roll-out later this year.

Therefore users of our GiddyWeb.com, Fibro.me.uk or other google-powered managed services may notice some changes in the coming weeks. You *should* receive an email to notify you when your account is upgraded.

It's almost here - the all-new version of Windows.

We've tried it, we like it, but we're in no hurry to install it. Your view may differ, and that's OK, but we strongly suggest you backup essential data and files first.

It just so happens that we are now Authorised Resellers of Carbonite - one of the leading online backup services - and of course we'd be very happy to provide you a licence and a little support in making sure the process runs smoothly.

We are currently having adverse performance on this kvmhost serving VPS, and are investigating the causes. We expect to have it back to normal operation soon, and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Update 12.30pm - We have started a batch migration of affected Virtual Machine from this kvmhost to two replacement kvmhosts. As this progresses, performance will improve for all VMs involved.

We will keep this status page updated as this process continues.

Planned System Maintenance

At the above time and date, mail21 will be upgraded to newer, faster hardware. The server will be unavailable for approximately 30 minutes during this time.

Due to incompatibilities in the old POP3 standard, a small number of clients may download mail still stored on the server. Switching to the IMAP protocol for any POP3 mailboxes will prevent this from occurring.

We apologise for any inconvenience this unavoidable downtime may cause.

Having secured some new services and promotions to offer to clients and members, we have also been busy working on a new website.

The new site uses Drupal, a Content Management System (CMS), that we are also using for a number of new client sites. We've kept the design simple but will be adding many new features and services to the site in the coming weeks.
